INTO THE CLOUDFOREST
Early this week a message came that more papers had
been signed and that now I could enter the reserve. I’d
received assurances like that before so I paid no
attention. But then the invaders began dismantling
their cabins, so maybe it was true. On Christmas Day,
unwilling to take a chance that I’d be barred from
entry again, before it was fully light I entered the
reserve, which for so many years has been forcibly
occupied by militant members of the campesino
organization CIOAC.

Sitton had been haunted by delusions for 15 of her 23 years. Spiders
burrowed under her skin. Ghosts ordered her to hurt people.
Schizophrenia and psychiatric drugs dulled her eyes and numbed her
brain.
